2006 - Tennessee Williams & Provincetown
The first Festival was held September 28 to October 1, 2006, and presented plays Williams worked on in Provincetown, including The Glass Menagerie and the world premiere of The Parade, Williams' 1940 gay romance, along with 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and The Unsatisfactory Supper from Mississippi State University, This Property Is Condemned from The University of the South, and scenes from the Hong Kong Repertory Theater's Cantonese The Eccentricities of a Nightingale.
Work adapted from Williams shown at the first Festival included opera and ballet versions of A Streetcar Named Desire thanks to Atlanta's Capital City Opera and Lowell Smith from The Dance Theater of Harlem. Williams' poetry was set to music in David Landon's The Strange, the Crazed, the Queer, Williams' Provincetown diaries inspired Carson Efird Dance Theater's The Road to Paradise, and the Festival screened a film adaptation of Williams' short story The Yellow Bird directed by Faye Dunaway.
